The Head of IP & Media at Bermans discusses some of the challenges associated with working in Manchester’s creative and digital industry
There’s no way around it – being in business of any kind is hard and increasingly complex.
One of the most frequent issues I come across when having the privilege to work with Manchester’s creative and digital industry is a reluctance to engage with the financial and professional sector, either when pitching for work or asking for advice.
There are several very valid reasons why; we’re not natural entrepreneurs, we often don’t understand the value of creativity, and some of us see your sector as just another cash cow to be milked as a major contributor to Manchester’s economy.
Some of these misconceptions are true.
Yes, we’re not great at tolerating risk and yes, we obsess over minor details, but one of the truly encouraging trends in Manchester’s financial and professional sector is a growing community of lawyers, accountants, insurers and other advisers that not only get what you do, but how you and why you do it and want to understand what’s important to you.
They’ll want to know, if you pitch to them, that they’re in safe hands and that you’ve put the right team together.
You’ll want to know the same thing, and if you go looking for them, the professionals whose advice you’ll want as well as need are out there.
It’s better to have their details and ask their advice in peacetime and not need them than the alternative, and if you’re willing to spend a bit of time with them, you’ll be surprised at what they’ll be willing to invest in you and your business.
We, like you, are hopefully worth it.
