Rochdale Science Extravaganza: Inspiring Communities for a Sustainable Future through Art & Science
Posted by on 10 Apr 2024
Rochdale Science Extravaganza is an event that promises to be a vibrant celebration of science and art with a focus on climate action held at the newly refurbished Town Hall, Rochdale, on Sunday, May 5th, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
At the heart of the event is the theme of Climate Change, a subject of critical importance to the Rochdale community and the world at large. The day will be filled with interactive exhibits, engaging workshops, and insightful discussions aimed at empowering children, young people, and families to understand and take action on environmental issues through STEM and the Arts.
This year’s extravaganza is made possible by the collaboration of an array of sponsors and participants, ranging from academic institutions to industry leaders and local businesses. Their collective efforts underscore the importance of accessible science education and community engagement in shaping a sustainable future.
The event is the brainchild of Mohammed Rahman, the driving force behind the Rochdale Science Initiative C.I.C. A former chef with a deeply personal motivation, Mohammed’s journey from culinary arts to community science advocate is as compelling as it is unconventional. His story, sparked by the inquisitive nature of his young son, serves as a testament to the power of curiosity and the importance of science in everyday life. Mohammed’s tireless efforts have culminated in this annual event, which last year drew an enthusiastic crowd of around 2,000 attendees.
The main sponsor, The Ogden Trust, is a family charity with Rochdale roots that actively supports the teaching and learning of physics. Founded by Sir Peter Ogden, the Trust’s commitment to Rochdale’s educational landscape is unwavering, with CEO Clare Harvey set to participate in the event.
Rochdale’s susceptibility to climate change, accentuated by recent flooding and the broader impacts on South Asia, makes the Extravaganza’s theme all the more relevant. Last year’s displays and discussions revealed the community’s deep concern and eagerness to engage with the science of climate change – an engagement that is both local and global.
There will be an opportunity to engage with Mohammed Rahman, a figure recognised by the British Science Association as a role model for science within the community, and witness first-hand the passion and dedication of Rochdale’s citizens. This is an opportunity to share good news, inspire other community leaders, and celebrate local initiatives that make a difference.
