Pop up performance shop by Tangled Feet at Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre

There’s going to be a touch of the funny, strange and beautiful in Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre – Rochdale, as Tangled Feet’s Pop Up Performance Shop opens its shutters.

Theatre company Tangled Feet, RBC, RDA and Culture Coop have commissioned a menu of short performances to fill an empty shop with artistic offerings that you don’t have to pay for. Taking a range of multimedia and interactive forms, you can expect something for every palate. Expect African drumming, a cross-generational tabla performance, interactive videos, an exploration of identity through interview and dance, clowns taking over the kitchen, video games coming to life, a poet throwing down the gauntlet and a celebration of owning the room. Three brand new 5-15 minute long performances by local Rochdale artists, as well as existing shows from Luton artists, will repeat during the day along a series of short films, between 10am-5pm on Saturday and 10.30am-4pm on Sunday.

BACKGROUND:
Since the 2020 lockdown, which had a huge effect on theatre’s freelancers, Tangled Feet has been commissioning and supporting their network of artists to develop, create and lead their own work.

Councillor Janet Elmsley Deputy Leader, Rochdale Borough Council added “We are delighted to welcome Tangled Feet and a number of local artists to perform at the Exchange Shopping Centre on Saturday and Sunday 21st and 22nd October 2023. The council and RDA are keen to support arts across the borough to ensure that residents not only enjoy the performances but have the opportunity to join in. This is the first of many cultural experiences that the council and its partners are planning over the coming months”. 

This event is supported with public funds as part of the Cultural Development Fund which is designed to help unlock local growth and productivity, promote economic and social recovery, and regenerate communities through capital investment in transformative place-based creative and cultural initiatives.
