The first of 40 new council-built industrial units have been completed on the Dodgson Street Industrial Estate.

The seven brand new units, some of which are already under offer, are designed to boost investment and jobs in Rochdale by helping small companies and sole traders stay in the borough as they grow their business.

Councillor Richard Farnell, leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “It’s great to see the first of these brand new units ready to go. The fact that we already have several under offer proves that there is a clear demand for them within our thriving business community.

“It’s rare for new units of this quality to come onto the market at affordable prices and flexible tenancy agreements, but we want to support small, micro companies and help them take their business to the next level.”

The units start at 750 square feet and each has two dedicated parking spaces. Some contain a mezzanine while others will have the option of adding a mezzanine later as business grows. The units are also close to junctions 20 and 21 of the M62, as well as Rochdale town centre and Rochdale train station.

Mark Cryer runs R&B Supplies Ltd from his unit in the Dodgson Street Industrial Estate. His company supplies glassware, crockery and cutlery to the hospitality and catering industry, with clients including local pubs like the Flying Horse and the Healey.

He said: “I like being in a council-run unit, because the quality is really high. You know if there’s an issue that needs resolving, it will get sorted quickly and the units are inspected regularly. As it’s the council too, you know you can ring one person and they will deal with any issues, be it environmental or a highways issue or anything.”

The new micro units are one of a number of council initiatives designed to help small and medium-sized businesses, including business rates discounts for new, independent businesses opening in selected areas and the building renovation grant.
