Rochdale-based Maqio Toys has more than doubled its floorspace by signing a lease on a warehouse in Milnrow. Since moving from Stockport to Middleton in 2017 the online toy retailer has grown its workforce to 31 and its turnover from £5m to £13m.

Maqio’s current warehouse in Middleton is 48,000 sq ft but they’ve now signed a lease on 103,000 sq ft premises in nearby Milnrow. The new site is expected to be fully operational in February 2022 and completes a 12-month search for the right property.

Managing director Edmund Lim said: “We have really good staff and were determined to stay in Rochdale so took our time in finding the right space. “Rochdale Borough Council and Rochdale Development Agency have been really supportive of us since we moved here in 2017 and that was another reason why we were determined to stay.

“The office of our new site in Milnrow is five times bigger than our existing space so it means we can grow. “Our new warehouse is only a 12-minute drive from our existing base in Middleton which is very important to our staff. “The run-up to Christmas is a very busy time for us so we’ll have a phased transfer with a view to being fully operational from Milnrow in early 2022.”

Maqio Toys has been a big donor to Rochdale Council’s Christmas Toy Appeal and Mr Lim said it was one part of their work in the community. “We really feel part of the Rochdale community and pride ourselves on offering value to our suppliers and our customers,” he said.

“We’ve previously worked with Rochdale Connections Trust to help disadvantaged children in the borough and when we couldn’t do that because of Covid-19 we decided to help in another way by donating directly to the Christmas Toy Appeal.”
