Bedding business leads decarbonisation efforts at Stakehill Industrial Estate

Rochdale based Comfy Group has achieved a 95 per cent reduction in landfill waste, thanks to increased recycling rates, innovative material repurposing, and a transition to recyclable packaging.
Sharing its journey to inspire other businesses based at Stakehill Industrial Estate, Comfy Group has recently reported a 25 per cent reduction in its carbon footprint.
Established in 1973, Comfy Group has become one of Europe’s leading bedding manufacturers, supplying brands such as Silentnight, Sealy, Snug, and Jeff Banks.
Kenya Ferguson, Compliance and Sustainability Manager, Comfy Group said: “We are determined to help the environment for a brighter tomorrow by making significant changes to our operations to reduce waste to landfill, our carbon footprint and single use plastics.
“Recently achieving our Global Recycled Standard certification, key initiatives include converting 940 lights to energy efficient LED technology, a 200 per cent increase in plastic recycling, a 56 per cent increase in carboard recycling and an ethical sourcing scheme for feather fillings.”
Stakehill Industrial Estate is part of Atom Valley, a Mayoral Development Zone with a vision to create a dynamic, interconnected manufacturing mega-cluster, blending innovative world-class industry with ground-breaking research and development.
This collaborative effort includes Rochdale Development Agency, Stakehill Business Improvement District (BID), SSE Energy Solutions, the Energy Innovation Agency, Rochdale Borough Council, the University of Manchester, and asset owners UBS.
